Call centre CV with no experience
Many adverts ask for matric and a few months of experience. Here is how to show what you do have.
What call centres look for in a first-timer
- Matric or Grade 12.
- A clear, friendly voice and good spoken and written English.
- Another language, if you speak one.
- Basic computer skills and a typing speed.
- Reliability: attendance, punctuality and willingness to work shifts.
Where to find experience you may not have counted
- Retail or restaurant work: serving customers, handling complaints, handling cash.
- Volunteering: church, school or community helplines, fundraising, tutoring.
- School leadership: prefect, SRC, debating, choir, team captain.
- Family and community: translating for family and neighbours.
- Courses: a typing course, telephone etiquette, computer literacy, customer service.
Example profile
Made-up person
Friendly and reliable school-leaver with a matric and 18 months of retail counter experience. Speaks English, Sesotho and Afrikaans, types at 35 words per minute and is available for shifts, weekends and public holidays. Looking for a first role in customer service.
Tips
- Test your typing speed at home and put the result on your CV. Free sites such as typing.com and monkeytype.com let you practise.
- List every language you can serve a customer in.
- Say clearly that you can work shifts, weekends and public holidays, if you can.
- Get a short reference from a manager or teacher.
- Beware of adverts that ask you to pay for training or a headset. A real employer does not charge you to get a job.

Build my call centre CVQuestions people ask
- Can I get a call centre job without experience?
- Some adverts ask for no experience, while others ask for six months or more. Apply for both, and show the skills you do have. A CV helps you get noticed but it cannot promise a job.
- Is a matric enough?
- Most adverts we read ask for matric or Grade 12. One accepted Grade 11 with two years of work experience.
