Keep it to one page. Say what job you are applying for, why you suit it, and that you are ready to start.
The structure
- Opening: the job you are applying for, where you saw it, and one line on who you are.
- Middle: your best two results or strengths, matched to what the advert asks for.
- Close: your availability (shifts, notice period) and a polite request for an interview.

Made-up letter
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Customer Care Consultant position advertised on Careers24. I have my matric, I speak English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans, and I type at 40 words per minute.
For two years I worked at a busy shop counter, where I dealt with up to 80 customers a day and handled returns and complaints. I am patient, I listen carefully and I like solving problems.
I can work shifts, weekends and public holidays, and I can start immediately. I would welcome an interview.
Yours sincerely, Thandeka Ndlovu

I work within the National Credit Act, treat every customer with respect and keep clear notes on every call.
I am available on 30 days' notice and can work Saturdays. Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely, Ruan van Wyk

I would like to apply for the Team Leader position. For three years I have led a team of 12 agents, with an average quality score of 91% and team attendance of 96%.
I coach every agent in a one-on-one each month, run daily huddles and report weekly to the operations manager.
I can work rotating shifts and would be glad to discuss how I can help your team. Kind regards, Sibusiso Mahlangu
Mistakes to avoid
- A letter that repeats your whole CV.
- "To whom it may concern" when the advert names a person or a company.
- Typing errors. Read it aloud before you send it.
- Promises you cannot keep, such as hours you cannot work.
Add a cover letter written from your CV answers for R50. Pick the job, the company, who it is to and the tone.
Build my call centre CVQuestions people ask
- Do call centres read cover letters?
- Some do and some do not. A short, correct letter costs you little and shows your written English, which matters in this work.
- How long should it be?
- One page, or about 150 to 250 words.
